Sunshine Kid’s Luncheon
The Chamber of Commerce Southside Council presents the 7th Annual Sunshine Kid’s Luncheon on Wednesday, July 7th, form 11:30am-1pm, at the Bessie Smith Multi-Cultural Center. This event benefits Downtown YMCA’s Sunshine Kid’s Program.
Motivational speaker Dane Bradshaw, a former star UT basketball player, will deliver the keynote address. The 6-foot-four Volunteers’ star from Memphis won the hearts of Tennessee fans with his clutch shots in big games and humble attitude. During his four years at UT, he became one of the most versatile players in the nation by starting at power forward and serving as the backup point guard for a team that earned national rankings in both his junior and senior seasons.
Bradshaw will be helping the Southside Council raise funds for the YMCA’s “Sunshine Kids Project,” a summer day-camp program for children with special needs. The camp serves 50 special needs children who have the opportunity to participate in camp activities with kids of all abilities.
A child with special needs in this program may have been diagnosed with Down’s syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, blindness, mental retardation or autism. These are only a few of the types of the special needs that “Camp Sunshine” counselors are specifically trained to deal with. The YMCA and UTC work together to select counselors for the camp, and Siskin children’s Institute provides training.
