The Chattanooga History Center will present a Nicely walking tour, Fountain Square, based on a section of Maury Nicely’s Chattanooga Walking Tour and Historic Guide, at 7:00pm on Tuesday, July 20th. The History Center’s Executive Director and Curator, Dr. Daryl Black will serve as tour guide.  Participants will meet Dr. Black on Walnut Street at Fourth Street. It’s slimy, it’s noisy, it’s smelly, it’s bumpy, and it’s GROSS this summer at Creative Discovery Museum!  Grossology:  The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body will be the featured exhibit from May 29 – Sept. 6, 2010.  With colorful, interactive displays and games, kids are sure to love learning about the body and how it functions.  Based on the best-selling book, Grossology by science teacher Sylvia Branzei, this exhibit has been presented in major museums, science centers and theme parks.

Kids have plenty of questions about the human body that aren’t always appropriate to discuss around the dinner table.  Grossology gives kids a fun environment to explore the answers to many of the slimy, oozy, crusty, stinky questions they love to ask about the human body.

Stepping through a giant mouth and tongue, visitors are introduced to the world of Grossology with a spectrum of bright exhibit areas to greet them. more »

Kids and Pros, headed up by Buddy Curry, will offer a week-long Kids and Pros Youth Football Camp in Chattanooga July 19th – 22nd, at Finley Stadium. This football camp is designed to not only polish physical football skills for kids ages 7-13, but to mentor kids, teaching them valuable life lessons and character traits along the way.

Kids and Pros Football Camp will take place each night, from 6-9pm.

Kids & Pros presented their first youth football camp in 2002. It was launched by former Atlanta Falcons Bobby Butler and Buddy Curry in order to teach “Character and Skills Through Athletics”. Through our unique Youth Football Experience, we now provide weekly youth football camps in the Southeast in conjunction with a Family Fun Day and/or A Pros & Joes flag football game featuring former NFL stars playing regular Joes.

The Asher Love Studio + Gallery presents “Keeping It Alive” – a street art installation by graffiti artist, Sourone – from July 10th thru August 29th 2010.  The two-month show will feature original art painted directly onto the walls and surfaces at the gallery. Additional works on canvas, board, signs and other found materials and objects will also be a part of the site-specific installation which intends to bring the outside indoors. An opening night reception will be held on Saturday, July 10th from 6:00pm-9pm. The event is free and open to the public. The Asher Love Gallery is located in the newly revitalized business district of downtown St. Elmo directly behind Pasha’s Coffee House and Blacksmith’s Bistro at the foot of Lookout Mountain. James Cameron’s AVATAR, is coming to the giant screen at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater beginning on Friday, May 21st.

The IMAX 3D Theater has been requesting the film for months, but until now, we were not able to get a contract to show the film. Priority to show first-run films, such as Avatar, goes to the large theater chains that can show the film repeatedly on multiple screens throughout the day for the length of the film contract. These theater chains have the right to block other theaters in close proximity from showing these films.

Persistence has paid off, and the IMAX 3D Theater is now able to bring Avatar to Chattanooga’s largest screen. World Changers, a Ministry of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, continues its partnership with the City of Chattanooga Department of Neighborhood Services and Community Development for the eighth year, to provide free home repair to qualifying resident residing within the Chattanooga City limits. Home repairs will take place July 13-July 23, 2010.

The Department of Neighborhood Services and Community Development coordinates essential aspects of the program to include the application process, marketing components, technical assistance, funding for procurement of materials and logistics.

The City of Chattanooga is one of ninety-seven (97) cities on World Changers 2010 project schedule. This year marks the twenty year anniversary of the program. Over the course of two weeks, the city will welcome nearly 300 World Changers volunteers who will provide home repair to thirty-seven (37) city-funded sites.

Transformation 6: Contemporary Works in Glass features the work of 28 glass artists—both emerging and internationally recognized—who are finalists and winners of the Raphael Founder’s Prize. This prize honors artists who are working in glass, metal, clay, wood and found materials, and expanding the boundaries in their fields through new techniques, ideas and approaches to their mediums. Techniques used by the participating artists combine traditional forms of glass-making with painting, sculpture and installation.

This exhibition was organized by the Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, PA.

This retrospective exhibition of contemporary glass sculptor, Stephen Rolfe Powell, will feature selections of the artist’s work from the last 20 years.

Powell, who is recognized both nationally and internationally for his colorfully patterned pieces, draws his inspiration from nature, and ancient Italian murrini techniques. Included in the exhibition will be work from his Teasers, Whackos and Screamers series. Many of the works are new and have never been shown before.

This course continues where Photoshop I left off, focusing on the greater use of layers to make image adjustments, composite photographs, and create photo collages. Class exercises will expand on contrast and tonal controls, color correction, and selection refinement, and cover the best techniques for burning and dodging, blurring and sharpening, and preparing images for printing. Students will have additional time to apply learned skills to creative assignments. Class limit: 9.

While not designed specifically for actors, it’s been helpful to those who have taken it. In it, you will cover three plays, read as much as you can aloud, talk about the history, the context, etc., as well as Elizabethan theatre and Mr. S himself. Will also cover Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III and Macbeth.
